Automate Agent Deployment Tool
Posted on January 26, 2018
This new tool is designed to help simplify and expedite onboarding a new client. It’s especially time saving if you need to do a rip and replace because the previous MSP didn’t bother to remove their Automate agent from the computers.
If you run this tool on a computer that already has Automate on it, the settings will be detected and you can choose to use those settings to roll out to the other agents. Otherwise, simply enter the server FQDN, location id, and server password to use for deployment.
How computers are found depends on the computer you use. If you run the tool on a domain controller (recommended), dsquery is run in the background to find computers. This is a fast process and will find the most accurate reflection of computers on the network. If you’re not on a domain controller, the command “net view” is used to find neighboring computers. This takes a little longer, but will find most computers, but may also find non-computers, such as routers and switches.
Once you have a list of computers, you can see what’s been deployed to and what you’re able to deploy to. Note that deployment requires admin permissions as the installer is copied over the network to the c$ share. This means that deployments will be more reliable in a domain, but a workgroup with a common username will also work. You can also right-click the list of computers to get additional options, such as filtering out the list, exporting the list to Excel, and more.
Finally, you can deploy the agent to the target computers. This is multi-threaded and will attempt to install up to 3 computers at a time. You can also choose to schedule the deployment for some time in the future in case you want to make it happen after hours or some other time.
I hope this tool helps to save you some time! You can download it here: Deployment Tool
